I wanted to like this movie more than I did. My problems (aside from the shaky cam fight scenes which I hate!) were that the plot makes little sense. This really should have been a 20 minutes short film. The answer to their problem was much simpler than they made it out to be. Now I know that there are countless films that have that “If they’d just done A, B or C then their life would have been much easier” however, this one was really off. Why such an elaborate plot to take revenge on one person? Just kill them. No need for the rest of the story. Roger Ebert gave it 3 ½ out of 4 stars, but I wonder which movie he watched. He states in his review:
“We know that Marissa has found the house in the woods. (It's unwisely in the middle of a clearing and visible to spy satellites.) Hanna and Erik don't know that, however. Erik decrees it is time for Hanna to test her survival skills in the wild (i.e., the real world), but when he crosses his fingers and sets her free, they're both quickly discovered by Marissa's CIA hunters.”
The problem is that that is NOT what happened at all. The CIA and the villainess (Marissa) had NO IDEA where the two of them were until Hanna activates a tracking device. They weren’t discovered when he “set her free” they were called to the location as the plot device which set the rest of the film in motion.
The film has some good qualities such as the story within about Hanna’s journey into unknown territory (the real world) after being raised in the middle of the wilderness. However, it has weaknesses as well such as why her father would teach her so much yet so little at the same time. She has never heard music and has no idea what electricity is yet she is able to use the internet when the plot calls for it like she’s been doing it her whole life.
If you take it at face value, the ride can be enjoyable, but I didn’t find this to be the fairy tale master piece that so many others seem to think it is. The twist in the plot is ok, the performances are very good, but in the end it falls flat as too much of it makes no sense when you give it more than a passing thought. The film has a good soundtrack and the cinematography is very good (other than the close-up shaky cam fights). All in all an ok evening 2 ½ out of 4 stars.
